Active School Holiday Programmes in Auckland: Sports, Parkour, Circus and More

Children enjoying an active school holiday programme in Auckland with sports, games and team activities.

School holidays can mean a lot of extra energy to fill, especially for children who would rather run, climb, jump or kick a ball than spend another day at home.

Fortunately, Auckland has plenty of programmes that make it easy to keep children active while giving them something new to look forward to. They can practise their favourite sport, experiment with parkour or circus skills, try gymnastics, or simply enjoy a busy day of games with other children.

We have gathered a selection of active holiday programmes across Auckland, with options for different ages, interests and experience levels.

Flow Academy of Motion

For children who love climbing, jumping and learning impressive new tricks, Flow Academy of Motion offers something a little different from a traditional sports programme.

Its holiday programmes introduce children aged 5 to 12 to parkour, tumbling, tricking, breaking and circus skills. The days also include games and movement challenges, with activities adapted for different ages and abilities.

Programmes run at Flow’s Albany and Pakuranga studios, making them accessible to families on the North Shore and in East Auckland.

Best for: Children who enjoy parkour, acrobatics and energetic physical challenges.

Kelly Sports runs holiday programmes at several locations around Auckland, with full days of sports, games and themed activities.

Rather than focusing on just one sport, children can experience a varied programme that may include football, basketball, cricket, athletics, hockey, dodgeball and team challenges. Some locations also organise special activity days and local trips, so every day can feel a little different.

The programmes cater for children aged 5 to 13 and are designed to be inclusive. Children can join whether they already play sport or simply want to have a go, stay active and meet new people. WINZ and OSCAR subsidies may be available for eligible families.

Its Circus Arts holiday programme gives children the opportunity to explore techniques used by professional circus performers while working on balance, coordination and confidence. TAPAC also runs programmes that combine singing, dancing and acting, making them a lively choice for children who are happiest when they can move, perform and use their imagination.

Programmes take place at TAPAC in Western Springs, with options for different age groups.

Auckland United Football Club

Young football fans can spend the holidays developing their skills with Auckland United Football Club at Keith Hay Park in Mount Roskill.

The club’s holiday programme combines coaching, skill activities and plenty of opportunities to play. Children can work on passing, dribbling, shooting and teamwork in a friendly environment.

The programme welcomes existing players as well as children who are newer to football and would like to become more comfortable and confident with the ball.

Best for: Children who love football or would like to improve their playing skills.

Tri Star Gymnastics

Tri Star Gymnastics offers holiday programmes where children can spend time in the gym and explore a range of movement activities.

Each day includes a gymnastics session, with other activities potentially covering tumbling, trampoline, rhythmic gymnastics and parkour. Children can practise balance, flexibility, coordination and strength while trying different equipment and skills.

Full day and half day options are available, which is helpful for families who do not need a complete day of care.

Best for: Children who enjoy gymnastics, tumbling, trampoline and parkour.

AUT Millennium

AUT Millennium on Auckland’s North Shore offers several holiday programmes for children with different sporting interests and experience levels.

Options may include general holiday programmes, swimming intensives, Aqua Adventure Days and athlete development sessions. Some focus on having fun and staying active, while others provide more structured coaching for children who would like to develop particular sporting skills.

Best for: Children interested in swimming, athletic development or structured sports training.

Waitakere Gymnastics

Based at Olympic Park in New Lynn, Waitakere Gymnastics runs school holiday programmes in a fully equipped gymnastics environment.

Children can enjoy gymnastics sessions alongside supervised games, free play and other activities. It is a relaxed way to experience the gym, practise movement skills and try something new without committing to a full term of classes.

Best for: Children who like climbing, jumping, tumbling and exploring gymnastics equipment.

Auckland Council Leisure Centres

Auckland Council Leisure Centres offer school holiday programmes at recreation centres across the city.

Activities vary between locations but often include team sports, active games, creative projects and outings around Auckland. Because programmes are available in several neighbourhoods, they can be a convenient choice for families looking for an active full day option close to home.

Best for: Families looking for a varied local programme with full day care.

How to Choose an Active Holiday Programme

The best holiday programme is not necessarily the one with the longest list of activities. It is the one your child will feel comfortable attending and genuinely look forward to.

Some children love the variety and social atmosphere of multi sport days. Others prefer to focus on football, gymnastics or swimming. For children who are not drawn to traditional sport, parkour, circus and dance can be wonderful ways to stay active.

Before booking, check:

  • The programme’s age range and whether beginners are welcome
  • Full day, school day and half day options
  • Drop off and pick up times
  • What clothing, footwear and equipment children need
  • Whether lunch and snacks are included
  • Available sibling discounts or WINZ and OSCAR subsidies

It can also help to involve your child in the decision. Looking through the activities together and choosing one or two favourite options may make the first day feel more exciting and less unfamiliar.

Popular days and locations can fill quickly, so it is worth checking availability early.
