Since 2017, Creative Matters has been helping children across Auckland explore art through after-school classes, holiday programmes, private workshops and creative events. Over the years, the team has delivered more than 1,000 programmes and worked with over 10,000 children, teachers and community members across Aotearoa.
Founded by educators with a passion for creative learning, Creative Matters was created to give children opportunities to experiment, imagine and express themselves through art in a supportive environment.
"We create spaces where children can feel free to experiment, imagine and create without pressure, while still developing strong artistic skills."
Today, Creative Matters offers a range of creative experiences for children, from weekly after-school classes to holiday workshops, art parties and private group sessions.
At Creative Matters, art education goes beyond learning how to draw or paint.
Children are introduced to a wide range of techniques and materials, including drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, mixed media, inks, watercolours, acrylics and design projects. Through these activities, they are encouraged to explore ideas, experiment with different materials and develop their artistic skills.
The team believes creativity plays an important role in children's overall development.
"We believe creativity is about so much more than making art. It helps children build confidence, resilience and a sense of identity."
By giving children opportunities to make decisions, experiment and trust their own ideas, Creative Matters aims to support confidence and creative thinking alongside artistic development.
Creative Matters runs after-school art classes at schools and venues across Auckland for children aged 6–13.
The programme is designed around regular weekly classes, giving children opportunities to explore a variety of artistic techniques and creative projects throughout the term. Students work with different materials and approaches while developing their skills and confidence over time.
Classes are limited to 13 children, creating a smaller group learning environment.
During the school holidays, Creative Matters offers themed art workshops designed for children aged 5-13 who love creating, making and experimenting. Exploring the creative process is more important than the outcome and children are guided to engage their own solutions.
Recent workshops have included projects inspired by fantasy gardens, mobiles, insects and night skies, giving children opportunities to explore painting, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media and creative construction.
With small group sizes and experienced educators, the workshops combine creative exploration with hands-on learning in a welcoming environment.
One of the most rewarding aspects of running Creative Matters has been seeing children return year after year.
The team says that watching students grow not only in artistic ability but also in confidence has been particularly meaningful.
"We want our classes to feel welcoming, encouraging and fun, a place where children can relax, make friends, try new things and fully express themselves."
Hearing from parents about how much their children look forward to classes and holiday workshops continues to remind the team why they started Creative Matters in the first place.
Creative Matters is currently preparing for its July Holiday Programme, which is shaping up to be its biggest yet.
With three weeks of workshops planned for both private and home-school students, along with a new venue in Remuera, there is plenty to look forward to.
The team is excited to welcome both returning and new families for another season of creativity, exploration and fun.
