Across Auckland, more people are looking for ways to stay active beyond traditional gyms and competitive sports. Physical activity is increasingly becoming not only a way to improve fitness, but also a way to build confidence, connection and wellbeing.
Flow Academy was created with exactly this idea in mind.
Founded in 2013 and officially opened in 2015, Flow Academy has grown into one of Auckland’s leading spaces for alternative movement disciplines, bringing together parkour, tricking, dance, acrobatics and flow arts in a supportive, community-focused environment.
Inspired by the concept of “flow state” in psychology, the academy encourages students to develop both physically and personally through movement, exploration and self-expression.
What makes Flow Academy stand out is its approach to training and personal development.
Unlike many traditional sports environments, Flow is not competition-oriented. Instead, the focus is on helping each student discover what works for them individually and build confidence through movement.
As the team explains:
“Flow isn't competition oriented - we are responsive, adaptive and focused on figuring out what works for the individual, what their passion is, what they excel at. We are about creating and supporting a personal movement journey for each student to explore and play with.”
This philosophy shapes the overall atmosphere at Flow Academy, where experimentation, curiosity and personal growth are encouraged.
Students are given space to explore disciplines such as parkour, free-running, tricking, breaking and gymnastics-based training in a way that feels adaptable to their own interests and abilities.
Rather than focusing purely on performance or outcomes, the academy encourages people to enjoy movement itself while developing confidence, resilience and self-expression along the way.
Trying a new discipline can feel intimidating at first, especially for people stepping into movement training for the first time. Flow Academy aims to create an environment where students feel comfortable learning, experimenting and progressing at their own pace.
The team describes the atmosphere they hope people experience when arriving at Flow for the first time as:
“Warm, friendly and there to allow you space and ideas to be creative. We want Flow to foster a sense of acceptance of experimentation and openness to failure.”
This openness is an important part of the academy’s culture. Mistakes are viewed as part of learning rather than something negative, helping students build resilience alongside physical skills.
The result is a space that feels welcoming, supportive and accessible to people with different backgrounds and experience levels.
At the heart of Flow Academy is the belief that movement can positively impact many areas of life beyond fitness alone.
The academy encourages students to develop a deeper connection to movement while also building confidence, social connection and self-expression through shared experiences and training.
As the team explains:
“A sense of what movement means to them individually and a deeper connection to it and its benefits physically, mentally and socially! We think everyone should move and should enjoy moving!”
This focus on enjoyment and personal connection helps create a more sustainable and meaningful relationship with physical activity, rather than one driven purely by competition or external achievement.
Alongside regular classes and training programmes, Flow Academy is also involved in community initiatives across Auckland.
One of the projects the team is especially excited about this year is their partnership with Auckland Council Out and About, delivering public Flow movement events and parkour workshops in parks and community spaces around the city.
The events bring physical activity into public spaces in a playful and accessible way.
As the team shares:
“We take our equipment out into parks around Auckland, and set up fun obstacles, incorporating trees and other elements in the spaces to inspire people of all ages to move differently out in the world.”
Flow Academy has also been running its Girls Parkour Programme this year, funded by Tu Manawa and Harbour Sport.
The initiative provides fully funded parkour workshops designed to help young women build confidence, strength and fitness while reducing barriers to participating in active recreation.
According to the team, the programme is about helping participants begin “a fun movement journey” while encouraging long-term confidence and participation in an active lifestyle.
Today, Flow Academy continues to build a unique movement culture in Auckland, combining fitness, creativity and community through movement.
Whether someone is completely new to training or already experienced in parkour, tricking or performance disciplines, Flow offers a supportive space to explore movement in an individual and engaging way.
By encouraging experimentation, openness and enjoyment, the academy creates an environment where people can build confidence, connection and a lasting relationship with movement.
