Language Classes in Auckland for Adults: A Beginner’s Guide
Want to learn Spanish for a trip, return to French after years away or try a language you’ve never studied? Auckland has adult language classes at community education centres and specialist schools, with different approaches to getting started.
Here are five providers to explore, from short introductory courses to programmes you can follow through several levels.
Selwyn Community Education
Selwyn Community Education at Selwyn College in Kohimarama offers languages including Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin. Courses vary by term.
Selwyn is particularly useful if you’re learning for travel, as it offers dedicated travel courses alongside its regular language programme. Spanish Level 1 introduces grammar, pronunciation and basic communication, while Spanish for Travellers focuses on vocabulary and phrases for a trip.
Its Japanese beginner course concentrates on spoken communication and initially uses romaji, the Roman alphabet, rather than requiring you to learn Japanese characters straight away. The course outlines explain what you’ll cover and whether any home study is expected.
Onehunga High School Adult Learning Centre runs language courses at its Pleasant Street campus in Onehunga. Many introductory courses run for seven or eight weeks, allowing you to try a language for a term before deciding whether to continue.
The programme includes French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin and Spanish, with further stages available in several languages. It also offers te reo Māori, Samoan, Tongan and New Zealand Sign Language.
That range makes Onehunga worth exploring if you want to learn a language used by family, friends or colleagues in Auckland. For most spoken languages, look for Stage 1 or Beginners. If you’re interested in NZSL, ask which course to start with, as its Level 1 programme contains several parts.
Alliance Française Auckland specialises in French, with courses from complete beginner through to advanced level.
New learners start at A1.1. If you already know some French, a level assessment helps you find a suitable class. Regular term courses run in ten-week blocks, with options in Remuera, Takapuna, the CBD and online, depending on the timetable.
Beyond the general courses, there are conversation classes and workshops on grammar and pronunciation. These can be useful later if your reading is progressing but you want more speaking practice, for example. Check the required textbooks when comparing the total cost.
Dante Alighieri Auckland
Dante Alighieri Auckland teaches Italian to adults, with daytime and evening courses. Contact the school to discuss a suitable starting level. It also usually holds an open day before each term where prospective students can meet teachers.
Language lessons sit alongside the society’s Italian cultural and social programme. Special classes sometimes cover cooking, cinema or literature, offering another way to explore an interest in Italy.
Dante is worth a look if you’d enjoy cultural activities as well as classroom learning. Check the adult course schedule for lesson times and ask about the next intake for complete beginners.
New Zealand Japan Society of Auckland
The New Zealand Japan Society of Auckland offers Japanese classes for adults, generally held in central Auckland. Groups have four to ten students, with a two-hour evening lesson each week and homework between classes.
Its beginner course is aimed at committed students preparing for the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test N5 or intending to live and work in Japan. It requires more ongoing study than a short course covering holiday phrases.
The programme starts at the beginning of the calendar year and continues through the school terms, so a new term does not necessarily mean a fresh beginner intake. Contact the society about when to join. Students also need their own textbooks and an annual society membership.
