Wānanga Matariki: Matariki Herenga Waka is a special Matariki evening kōrero exploring the traditions, knowledge and future of waka voyaging in Aotearoa and across the Pacific.
Presented by the crew of Ngahiraka-Mai-Tawhiti and Te Kura Waka, this free public wānanga brings together experienced navigators, cultural leaders and storytellers to share insights into traditional celestial navigation, ocean knowledge, waka hourua traditions, and the intergenerational revival of indigenous voyaging practices.
Through personal stories, cultural perspectives and discussion, speakers will reflect on the past, present and future of waka navigation, and the role of mātauranga Māori in reconnecting communities with whakapapa, te ao Māori and the moana.
The evening features respected speakers and facilitators including Tainui Stephens, Manihera Forbes, Hinerapa Rupuha and Tamahau Tangitu, each bringing extensive experience in Māori storytelling, cultural leadership, traditional navigation and Pacific voyaging.
