General communication skills: at the end of the class, the student can introduce self or someone else, ask and answer basic questions.

Research shows that it takes between 15 - 25 hours of study to be able to conduct the simplest of conversations in a second language, with that study being regularly undertaken (preferably daily) over a 6 - 8 week period. Your teacher will set homework assignments to reinforce classroom learning, and also recommends that you practice daily on www.duolingo.com or similar.
