Get ready to bring clay characters to life! In this fun and creative one-day workshop, children will discover the magic of claymation and stop-motion animation.
Tutor Guy Capper, Co-Creator of Robert and Sheepy, has been teaching Claymation for 25 years.
Using modelling clay, imagination, and a tablet, they’ll learn how a series of tiny movements can be transformed into their very own animated movie. Throughout the day, students will dream up characters, build simple clay models and sets, and develop a short story for their animation. They’ll explore the basics of storytelling, camera positioning, movement, timing, and stop-motion techniques, learning how animators create the illusion that an ordinary clay character can suddenly walk, dance, tumble, or embark on a miniature adventure.
All students get to take home the claymation models they create, including baked Fimo Eyes and Teeth.
The workshop is designed to be playful and hands-on, with plenty of room for experimentation and individual creativity. No previous animation experience is needed. Whether your child loves sculpting, storytelling, filmmaking, or simply making wonderfully strange things out of clay, they’ll have the chance to turn their ideas into something they can actually watch.
By the end of the workshop, children will have experienced the whole claymation process, from the first lump of clay to the final animated sequence. Along the way, they’ll practise patience, problem-solving, visual storytelling, and adding audio and sound fx, and creative teamwork, while discovering just how much fun can happen one tiny frame at a time.
What to Bring:
Children will work in groups with provided tablets, but are welcome to bring their own devices with Stop Motion Studio or iMotion Pro already installed if they like. If bringing a personal device, please make sure it is fully charged, has enough free storage space for your animation, and is clearly labelled with your child’s name.
