Join Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa for a meaningful and educational day exploring Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Aotearoa New Zealand’s founding document.

This free event marks the signing of the Raukawa Moana sheet of Te Tiriti on 29 April 1840. Through a series of workshops, conversations and creative sessions, you’ll be invited to listen, reflect, and deepen your understanding of the histories, stories, and shared connections that shape Aotearoa today.

Taking place within Signs of a Nation and Hīnātore, the programme offers a mix of guided learning and interactive experiences, including:

  • Educational sessions led by Te Tiriti o Waitangi educators
  • Ruri Raranga poetry workshops exploring voice, identity, and connection
  • Opportunities to engage with Te Tiriti resources and perspectives

Kaikōrero | Speakers

  • Aperahama Hurihanganui – Wairarapa, Te Tai Rāwhiti, Te Arawa
  • Hinemoana Baker – Ngāti Haumia ki Te Aro, Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Te Āti Awa, Kāi Tahu, Germany, England
  • Rebecca Sinclair – Pākehā (Scotland, England)

Ruri Raranga is a gentle, creative wānanga where participants co-create a collective spoken poem. Blending English and te reo Māori, these sessions offer a calm and inclusive space for expression, reflection, and connection, with no prior experience needed.
