Think Talk: When Machines Rule Markets: AI, Data Power, and the Crisis of Democracy
AI companies are transforming corporate power in ways that go far beyond traditional market dominance. This talk examines three key shifts: from controlling resources to controlling information; the rise of data networks that create self-reinforcing monopolies; and "temporal sovereignty," where predictive AI gives corporations unprecedented ability to foresee and shape social outcomes. These changes enable a new form of influence—"cognitive capture"—where AI corporations shape how people think and make decisions through opaque algorithms, threatening democratic processes from public debate to elections. Drawing on recent regulatory responses, I argue that corporate law frameworks designed for the industrial era cannot adequately address corporations that directly influence how we think and how information flows through society.
About Professor Alexandra Andhov, Chair of Law and Technology at the University of Auckland and Director of ALTeR Center. Professor Andhov's research focuses on corporate law, capital market law, and the regulation of emerging technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence.
