Expressive watercolour is a loose, fluid painting style that focuses on mood, light and movement over strict realistic detail. The inability to anticipate exactly what the paint will do helps to produce spontaneous and unique results which makes watercolour an exciting medium to work with.
In this course we will learn to set the conditions for surprising and beautiful accidents to occur on the page. By incorporating these looser abstract elements into representational paintings we can convey heightened emotions in our work.
Throughout the term we will cover the following:
- The wet into wet technique to achieve one of a kind paint interactions.
- Learn about transparent colour mixing to create luminosity in your paintings.
- Use marbling to find organic shapes and patterns.
- Study the relationship between line and colour and the different ways they can be combined to find a personal style.
- Experiment with composition through collage.
Each class we will look at examples of historic and contemporary painting, and discuss how to selectively incorporate references into your work. Over the term you will build up a visual style and body of work.

Basic materials included.
Students must be at least 16 years of age to attend this course.
