Perfect for those with little or no experience, this course will guide you through the basics of creating elegant, expressive lettering using a broad-edged pen and ink.
This class follows on from the Introduction to Calligraphy workshop and is an ideal next step if you'd like to improve your handwriting, develop a creative hobby, or begin your calligraphy journey.
Throughout the six-week course, you'll learn the fundamentals of calligraphy while becoming familiar with your tools and practising three classic lettering styles:
You'll explore both minuscule (lowercase) and majuscule (capital) letterforms, learning how to master pen strokes, build consistent letter shapes, and understand the techniques behind beautiful lettering.
You'll receive exemplar sheets and course notes for each lettering style, giving you everything you need to continue practising at home.
By the end of the course, you'll have the confidence to create your own calligraphy projects, including personalised cards, quotations, meaningful phrases, and decorative lettering. You'll also begin a personal project to help reinforce your new skills and develop consistency, discipline, and an appreciation for the finer details of calligraphy.
Your course fee includes all materials (valued at $15), and you'll take home your own calligraphy pen. You don't need to bring anything to class.

Margaret Woollett is a freelance calligrapher and lettering artist with more than 25 years of experience as a student, freelancer, and teacher. Based in her Devonport studio, she teaches calligraphy classes at community centres and works with a wide range of commercial clients, helping students discover the art and craft of beautiful lettering.
