Learn the basics of sewing and make your own tote bag and apron or hat in this fun, practical course.

Always wanted to learn to sew? This fun, beginner-friendly course will teach you the fundamentals of sewing while you make your own tote bag and apron. By the end of the course, you'll feel confident using a sewing machine and will have completed two practical projects.

Designed for complete beginners, the course covers essential sewing skills through hands-on learning. As you create your projects, you'll gain confidence working with patterns, fabric, and sewing techniques while building skills you can continue using at home.

Expected learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Thread and confidently use a sewing machine.
  • Lay out and accurately cut fabric.
  • Sew a simple garment from start to finish.
  • Understand basic design, fabric selection, and construction techniques.

If time allows, you'll also have the opportunity to make a bucket hat or create an additional tote bag or apron.

Materials and what to bring

Your course fee includes the tote bag and apron patterns.

You'll need to bring your own fabric, thread, interfacing, pins, and other sewing supplies. During the first class, you'll learn how to choose suitable fabrics and materials, how much you'll need, and where to purchase them. Please bring a notebook and pen, as the first session focuses on getting familiar with the sewing machines and planning your projects.

Equipment

The sewing room is equipped with Bernina sewing machines for students to use during class. You're welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you'd like to become familiar with its operation.

Fabric scissors, paper scissors, measuring tapes, and other shared tools are available in the classroom, although bringing your own basic sewing kit is recommended.

Recommended sewing kit

  • Tailor's chalk or a fabric marking pen
  • Pins
  • Fabric scissors
  • Small scissors or thread snips
  • Seam ripper
  • A bobbin suitable for your sewing machine (or a Bernina-compatible bobbin if using the classroom machines)

Continue your sewing journey

After completing Sewing for Beginners, you can continue developing your skills in Sewing - Next Steps, where you'll learn to make a simple skirt or trousers. You may also enjoy Pattern Alteration and Design or one of the specialist weekend sewing workshops.
