Explore the versatile and expressive world of gouache in this hands-on, experimental workshop.

Come explore the versatile and expressive world of gouache in this hands-on, experimental workshop. Designed for both beginners and those looking to loosen up their painting practice, this session is an opportunity to play, experiment and discover what gouache can do.

We’ll begin with a brief introduction to the origins and history of gouache, looking at how the medium has been used across different periods and by a range of well-known artists. We’ll explore examples of gouache in practice, drawing inspiration from the distinctive ways artists have used its bold colour, opacity and versatility.

From there, we’ll get stuck into the medium through a series of playful exercises and experiments. You’ll learn the fundamentals of working with gouache — from mixing colours and exploring opacity to layering, mark-making and creating different textures — while being encouraged to develop your own approach.

Rather than focusing on creating a perfect finished painting, this workshop is about curiosity, experimentation and enjoying the process of discovering what gouache can do.

All materials included.

Thirty minute lunch break - bring a packed lunch to enjoy in our historic house or explore the local Te Aro cafes. Coffee and tea provided at lunch.
