Cooking Classes in Wellington: Courses, Baking & Weekend Workshops

People learning cooking techniques during a hands-on class, with ingredients and a frying pan on the kitchen counter.

Want to make your own pasta, get better at baking or try something beyond your usual weeknight meals? Wellington’s cooking classes range from community evening courses to small-group workshops and specialist pastry lessons.

Savour Cooking School

Savour began as a Wellington Meetup group where people gathered for cooking, tastings and themed dinners. Classes still have that social feel: groups are small, the cooking is hands-on, and most sessions finish with everyone sharing what they’ve made.

Founder Wendy Nolan Joyce is a professional chef and university lecturer. Her interests in food history, gardening and foraging help shape the workshops, while guest chefs bring their knowledge of different cuisines.

Vegetables and herbs come from Savour’s own garden where possible. Seasonal cooking, fermentation and making good use of ingredients are recurring themes, connecting what happens in the kitchen with how food is grown and sourced.

Where: Wadestown and Tawa, depending on the workshop.

Sugar Flour Pastry School

Sugar Flour is for those who tend to look at the dessert menu first. Founder Maxine Scheckter trained in French pâtisserie and worked in kitchens including Logan Brown in Wellington and The Fat Duck and Sketch in London.

She opened Sugar Flour as a pâtisserie in 2018, then turned it into a school the following year. She now teaches pastry-making step by step, helping home bakers work through techniques that can be difficult to grasp from a recipe alone.

Her cookbook, Patisserie Made Simple, reflects the same approach: making more involved pastry work accessible to people baking in their own kitchens.

Where: Newlands.

Wellington High School Community Education Centre

Wellington High School Community Education Centre offers cooking as part of its wider adult learning programme, with evening courses alongside Saturday workshops.

The food programme includes cooking from different countries as well as skills such as cheesemaking and cake decorating. Courses over several sessions give you time to get familiar with a cuisine and practise at home between classes. A one-day workshop lets you concentrate on a particular food or technique.

For home cooks, that means a choice between building a repertoire of meals and spending a day on something you might not attempt alone.

Where: Mount Cook.

Tawa College Community Education

Tawa College Community Education offers practical adult learning in a welcoming community setting. Most courses require no previous experience, with tutors guiding learners through the steps.

Its food programme draws on teachers with their own specialties. Tutors have included chef Ha Nguyen teaching Vietnamese cooking, Manjula Patel teaching Indian cooking and Alexis Murti teaching cheesemaking. The selection changes by term.

For those living in Wellington’s northern suburbs, it’s a convenient way to learn locally and meet others with an interest in cooking.

Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand

You don’t need to be planning a career as a chef to attend Le Cordon Bleu New Zealand. Its Cuba Street campus offers workshops and masterclasses for home cooks alongside its professional programmes.

The shorter sessions offer a chance to learn in a culinary school kitchen without enrolling in a full qualification. Each workshop has its own focus, so read the description for the level and balance of demonstrations and hands-on cooking.

For those who want to study techniques in more depth, the school also offers longer fundamentals programmes. Chefs demonstrate skills before students practise them in the kitchen, covering foundations such as knife work, sauces and doughs. These require a much larger time commitment than an individual workshop.

Where: Te Aro, central Wellington.
