A short course for those new or relatively new to Te Reo Māori and Māori culture.

Learning a language also means learning the culture behind it. Throughout this course, you'll explore both Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori, gaining an understanding of the language, traditions, values, and beliefs that shape Māori identity.

Course outline:

It is the intention of this course to deliver you a basic understanding of some language structures, grammar, pronunciation and concepts that are core of the indigenous people of Aotearoa, Ngā Iwi Māori - the Māori people. Tikanga Māori (values, beliefs and processes within Māori social structures) will be interwoven as an integral part of the course structure.

Course content includes:

  • Māori alphabet and pronunciation
  • Greetings
  • Introductions
  • Farewells
  • Counting/prices
  • Telling the time
  • Asking and responding to simple questions
  • Introduction to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Waitangi Tribunal
  • Māori proverbs
  • Introduction to te Pōwhiri (ceremonial welcome)
  • Tikanga Māori

Prerequisites:

This course is taught in English. For students with English as a second language, we recommend that only those with Upper Intermediate or higher level English attend this course.

Conditions:

  • Registrants must be aged 16 years or older.
  • Registrants must not be currently enrolled at a secondary school.
  • You should attend at least 80% of your classes to qualify for a fee subsidy.
