Continue learning Te Reo and Te Ao Māori in this follow-up course for those who have completed Te Reo Māori Introduction 1.

This course builds on the foundations developed in Level 1, helping you expand your language skills while deepening your understanding of Māori culture, values, traditions, and worldview. If you're not yet confident progressing, you may wish to repeat Introduction 1. If you completed a beginner's course elsewhere, please contact the office so the most suitable course level can be recommended.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss our responsibilities as a bicultural nation under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Recognise key Māori values within the Treaty, including whanaungatanga, pepeha, and tikanga.
  • Understand the significance of whakapapa and confidently describe your family and relationships from a Māori perspective.
  • Form simple sentences to describe parts of the face and body.
  • Understand marae protocol.
  • Recognise the importance of karakia and confidently recite one.
  • Understand the cultural meaning of whakataukī (proverbs) and kīwaha (idioms) and confidently recite examples of each.

This course forms part of the Selwyn Community Education Te Reo Māori learning pathway:

  • Te Reo Māori Introduction 1 – for beginners.
  • Te Reo Māori Introduction 2 – builds on the knowledge gained in Introduction 1.
  • Te Reo Māori Introduction 3 – for students who have successfully completed the first two courses.

You're welcome to repeat any level to strengthen your confidence before moving on.

Course fees

  • Standard course fee: $155
  • TEC-subsidised course fee: $60 for eligible learners

Eligible New Zealand citizens, residents, refugee-status holders, and some other qualifying learners may receive the subsidised fee. Students must attend at least 80% of classes to qualify.

Prerequisites

To enrol in this course, you should have successfully completed Te Reo Māori Introduction 1 at Selwyn Community Education with strong attendance.

If you completed a beginner's Te Reo Māori course elsewhere, or your previous attendance was limited, please contact the office before enrolling. An enrolment interview may be arranged to help determine the most appropriate course level.

About your tutor

The daytime course is taught by Eda Tang, who supports students as they build confidence in both Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori through practical language learning and cultural understanding.
