Start learning Mandarin Chinese with this beginner-friendly course designed for those with no prior experience.
This course offers a practical introduction to the language, helping you build confidence in everyday communication. You’ll learn how to introduce yourself, greet others politely, and use simple phrases for travel and daily life.
The course covers the basics of Chinese pronunciation (Pinyin), numbers, telling the time, and essential vocabulary related to family, directions, food, and travel. You’ll also be introduced to simple Chinese characters, including both basic reading and writing.
By the end of the course, you can expect to understand and use simple words and phrases, introduce yourself and your family, tell the time and dates, and recognise some common characters. The course is suitable as a foundation for further study or as preparation for travel.
Classes run once a week over 8 weeks. Short homework tasks and regular practice between sessions are encouraged to support your progress.
The course is led by experienced tutor Timothy Wu.
This course may be eligible for a subsidised fee through TEC funding for those who meet certain criteria (including NZ citizens and residents). If eligible, the course fee is $50. Please contact the provider to confirm your eligibility.
