1. Try a Creative Skill
If you want to make something with your hands, start with a creative class.
Pottery is a popular choice because you can begin with a one-off workshop and see how you like it. Painting and drawing classes work well for beginners too, especially if you haven’t done anything artistic in years.
You could also try sewing, jewellery making, floristry or other craft workshops.

4. Try Something You Wouldn’t Normally Choose
Sometimes the most interesting new skill is the one you would never have picked for yourself.
Maybe that’s welding, kintsugi, pottery on the wheel, bone carving or another hands-on workshop that feels completely outside your usual routine.
You don’t need to imagine yourself doing it for years. A short course or one-off workshop is enough to see whether it clicks.
And even if it doesn’t become your next hobby, trying something unfamiliar can still be a pretty good way to spend an afternoon.
5. Choose a Course You Can Keep Coming Back To
If you already know you want more than a one-off experience, a short course gives you time to actually build a skill.
Instead of trying something once, you come back each week, practise, get more confident and start to notice your progress.
